DPS Troopers Clash With Protesters Outside Dilley ICE Detention Facility

DILLEY, Texas — January 28, 2026 — A tense and chaotic confrontation erupted Wednesday afternoon outside the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas, as Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers deployed chemical irritants against demonstrators protesting the ongoing detention of immigrant families, including young children.

Hundreds of protesters had gathered near the facility — a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center — to call attention to what demonstrators described as inhumane conditions and the continued custody of a 5-year-old Ecuadorian boy and his father, who were recently transferred to Dilley following their arrest in Minneapolis.

Protest Escalates Into Confrontation

Around mid-afternoon, roughly 40 DPS troopers in full riot gear arrived at the protest site aboard a Dilley Independent School District bus. As protestors advanced closer to the perimeter, law enforcement issued dispersal orders. According to DPS, approximately 150 demonstrators refused to retreat and attempted to breach the established protest barrier — allegations that organizers deny.

Shortly thereafter, troopers deployed pepper balls and other less-lethal chemical projectiles in an effort to disperse the crowd. White clouds of irritant drifted through the protest area, causing many demonstrators — and some journalists — to cough and clutch their eyes and throats. Videos circulating online captured chaotic scenes of people helping one another flush their eyes with water.

At least two protesters were detained during the clashes, with charges including resisting arrest and interference with public duties, according to law enforcement statements.

Voices from Both Sides

Participants in the demonstration described the law enforcement response as disproportionate and heavy-handed. Many chanted slogans such as “Free the children” and “Children are not criminals!”, pressing for greater transparency and humane treatment of detainees.

Meanwhile, DPS officials defended their actions as necessary to maintain order and protect public safety after protesters allegedly ignored repeated orders to disperse. A spokesperson stated that troopers responded to a request from city officials and coordinated with local and federal authorities during the operation.

National Attention and Lawmaker Involvement

The protest coincided with visits by several prominent Democratic lawmakers, including U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), who met with the detained boy and his father inside the facility. Castro later highlighted concerns about the psychological toll of detention on young children and reiterated calls for their immediate release.

Advocates and civil rights groups have seized on the incident to criticize federal immigration enforcement policies under the current administration and to spotlight broader debates over the detention of families and children.

What’s Next

After the initial clashes, tensions eased somewhat, with law enforcement maintaining a presence around the facility and demonstrators continuing to voice their demands. As national attention intensifies, the situation in Dilley remains fluid, with ongoing legal challenges and community activism shaping whaAuthor’s Opinion

The confrontation outside the Dilley ICE detention facility highlights a deeper and increasingly uncomfortable debate around immigration enforcement in the United States. While maintaining law and order is an essential responsibility of the state, the use of chemical agents against protesters—many of whom were advocating for detained families and children—raises concerns about whether the response was proportionate to the situation.

Detention centers are more than political flashpoints; they are places where real people, including vulnerable children, live under immense psychological stress. Scenes of protests turning chaotic only underline how emotionally charged this issue has become, and how urgently humane, transparent solutions are needed.

At the same time, protests must remain peaceful to retain moral authority and public support. Escalation from either side risks shifting attention away from the core issue: the treatment of families and children in immigration custody.

What happened in Dilley should act as a warning signal. Immigration policy cannot rely solely on enforcement and force. A balanced approach—one that upholds security while respecting human dignity—is essential if lasting solutions and public trust are to be achieved.t may come next.
