Security guards across Kerala have announced a protest at Varsikha Bhavan demanding a significant increase in their wages. The demonstration is expected to draw attention to long-standing grievances regarding low salaries, extended work hours, and lack of basic benefits for security personnel.

The Kerala Security Guards Welfare Association stated that their members are struggling to meet daily expenses, and the government must intervene to ensure fair compensation. The protest is planned peacefully but aims to send a strong message to the authorities about the urgency of the issue.

Understanding the Kerala Security Act 1965

The Kerala Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 1965, commonly known as the Kerala Security Act 1965, was enacted to regulate the working conditions of security personnel and private security agencies. Key provisions include:

  • Registration: All private security agencies must register with the state government.
  • Licensing: Security personnel must be licensed, and agencies are responsible for compliance.
  • Working Conditions: Agencies must adhere to standards regarding working hours, wages, uniforms, and leave entitlements.
  • Welfare: Provisions exist to ensure the welfare of guards, including social security and protection against exploitation.

Despite these provisions, many guards claim that agencies often fail to comply, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. The current protest highlights the demand for strict enforcement of these laws and an immediate salary revision.

Most of the Agency Owner in Kerala are members or high doner of ruling party so labour consern are not heard

Most worker are above 60 years old and supported with heavy medicine in India security guards are looked down were are as other countries like USA, UK it is respectable job not because of salary or qualifications it's because someone for little money are taking responsibility of your assest and your security

Author’s Opinion:
Security guards play a crucial role in safeguarding lives and property, yet they remain one of the most underpaid workforces in Kerala. The government must act swiftly to ensure fair wages and better working conditions. A happy, fairly compensated guard is a more efficient and responsible guard.
